Resident Registration in Japan: What to Do at City Hall|

If you will live in Japan for more than a short stay, one of your first important tasks is to register your address at your local city or ward office.
For most mid- to long-term residents, this procedure should be completed within 14 days after you decide where you will live. In Shinjuku, you can submit the notification after you have moved in—not before.
What should you bring?
- Your residence card
- Your passport (especially if your residence card will be issued later)
- A moving-out certificate, if you moved from another city or ward in Japan
- Your My Number Card, if you already have one
- Documents showing your family relationship, if you register family members
The documents you need may differ depending on your situation. Please check the website of your local municipal office before you go.
What happens at the municipal office?
After your address is registered, it may be written on the back of your residence card. You may also be able to receive information about your resident record, My Number, National Health Insurance, and other daily-life procedures.
